The races consist of four to six riders competing counter clockwise on an oval circuit. The cycles only have one gear and no brakes which means that these elite riders have to use only their skill and experience to control the throbbing metal machine beneath them. The sport began in the 1920's, in New South Wales, Australia. Now there are competitions all over the world, including major events like the Speedway World Cup. The highest scorer in all of the Speedway Grand Prix events is crowned the World Champion. The sport is dominated in central and northern Europe, but is also practices in Australia and North America.

Denmark's Nicki Pederson is the current title holder, having won the Speedway Grand Prix events in 2008. In the Grand Prix, sixteen riders compete in each part of the series, and ride over a total of 20 heats that puts each rider against every other ride one time. The top eight will go onto the semi-finals, and the top two from each semi will then go onto the final. The points earned during the regular races are 3 points for a win, 2 for runner-up and a single point for third place, with fourth place and below receiving no points. In the final, the points are doubled, so a rider who does well in the final may be able to place, even if he hasn't had as good as season as everyone else.
