Felipe Massa won his first race since a skull fracture in July at the Hungarian Grand Prix and he dedicated it to his new son, Felipinho, born just a week ago. The event was eleven hours long, or just about, and teammates Lucas di Grassi and Julio Campos both shared the finish line with Massa as he crossed it after a grueling 644 laps. Felipe Massa had just finished a heat win at the International Challenge of the Stars last week and the Granja Viana Kart Race was his first outright win since the accident.
He said that this win had been a goal for him, and that his dedication of the win to his son was his way of saying how much he loved him. This was the second time that Massa had won at Granja Viana, with the first time being back in 1997 when the race had first been run. The second place winner for the 2009 Granja Viana was Ricardo Zonta and then Rubens Barrichello's team took third place this year. This race came after Massa missed eight races of the 2009 Formula One circuit, after the accident at the Hungaroring.
Massa was hit in the head by a flying spring that came off of Rubens Barrichello's car. He had surgery in Budapest and then went home to Brazil and recovering waiting for a chance to make a comeback at the 2010 Formula 1 season, which begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver may be thinking that it is quite ironic, that the driver who lost the spring that put him for – some thought – out for the count, he beat in this year's Granja Viana, with Barichello's team coming in behind Massa.
