The official name for this year's edition of the Chinese Grand Prix is the People's Republic of China Sinopec Chinese Grand Prix. The race will take place at the Shanghai International Circuit in the district of Jiading which is near Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. It was opened in 2004 and host the first edition of the Chinese Grand Prix in that very same year. The circuit length is 5.451 km or 3.387 miles with 16 turns along the course of the track. The course lap record for formula one was set by Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher back in 2004 in the Ferrari F2004 with a time of 1:32.238.
The 2009 formula one racing season has been the break out competition for Great Britain's Jenson Button. The 29 year old driver from Frome, Somerset has been superb in both winning the pole and then winning each of the first two races. Thanks to his amazing start formula one's newest team- Brawn-Mercedes- have won both the Australian Grand Prix and then the Malaysian Grand Prix. At the most recent race in Malaysia, Button was followed on the podium by Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber in 2nd place and fellow German Timo Glock of Toyota who finished 3rd. The Malaysian GP marked the 2nd straight week that Button and to a certain extent Brawn-Mercedes racing had done extremely well. It was also the second straight week in which the constructor that won the pole also won the race. However, when it had happened the week prior, it had been the first time in 55 years that a constructor had won the pole and the race. While button took the pole with the 22 car, Italian driver Jarno Trulli of Toyota was second while Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull-Renault was 3rd. Button's fellow Brawn driver Rubens Barrichello of Brazil was 4th.

Overall, the race was a slight improvement over the opening gp as 14 of the 20 cars that started the race were able to finish. The race had been cut short after just 33 laps due to an intense rain and the results over the first 31 laps were used. Therefore, only half the points were awarded per formula 1 rules which dictate that when less than 75% of a race is completed, full points cannot be awarded. The official race results saw Button take first place and 5 points with Heidfeld and Glock placing 2nd and 3rd. The list of point winners was rounded out by Trulli in 4th place, Barrichello 5th, Mark Webber of Red Bull-Renault in 6th, the aforementioned Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes in a most disappointing 7th place and last but not least, Nico Rosberg of Williams-Toyota in 8th. While they did not win any points, the Malaysian Grand Prix was a bit of an improvement for the beleaguered Ferrari, as both cars were able to finish. Brazilian Felipe Massa was 9th while Finland's Kimi Raikkonen finished in the 14th position.
The opening race of the 2009 formula season had taken place in Australia at the ING Australia GP. Jenson Button was in command during that race much as he was at Malaysia. However, on this occasion Brawn were even more impressive as while Button took first place, Barichello finished second to give Brawn-Mercedes maximum points. Lewis Hamilton had initially finished in 3rd place of the race but would later have his points taken away after it was deemed he had participated in an illegal pass.
Going into this 3rd live formula one gp the driver standings see Button with a perfect score of 15 points in first place with fellow Brawn-Mercedes driver Rubens Barrichello 2nd at 10 points while the Italian Jarno Trulli is 3rd with 8.5 points and the German Timo Glock is 4th with 8 points. Of the 4 players atop the drivers standings, all 4 have finished both races within the top 5 spots. As could be expected, the constructors' log is currently dominated by Brawn-Mercedes with 25 points where they held an 8 point lead over 2nd place Toyota while BMW Sauber checks in number 3 with 4 points from 2 events.
