The Russ Friedman 400 starts on Saturday, May 2nd. The qualifying happened on Friday, and number 83, Brian Vickers had the best qualifying speed reaching 127.131 followed closely by Jeff Gordon with a maximum speed 126.844.

The Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia is ¾ of a mile long. The race is named after a Vietnam Vet who won a contest this year to have the race bear his name. The contest is in its third year with last year's winner and race name Dan Lowry while the 2007 race bore the name The Jim Stewart 400. The race is presented by Crown Royal, who has been sponsoring the event since 2006.
Some call the RIR track the “perfect stock car track” but in truth the track is pretty similar to most, consisting of mostly flat track area with turns banked at 14 degrees. The race has been running 400 laps since 1976 and in 1986 Kyle Petty won the Richmond race, making him NASCAR's first third generation winner with his father, Richard Petty also winning at Richmond as well as the younger Petty's grandfather.
Favorite's in this years race include Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch. Even though Brian Vicker's speed was fastest in the qualifying he remains a longshot to win.
