The Firestone Indy Lights event at Chicagoland is on Saturday, August 29th and will feature 67 laps and one half a mile over 100 miles for these up and coming drivers. The Firestone Indy Lights Series has produced some incredible drivers, including Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, Scott Harrington, Raphael Matos, Casey Mears, Jeff Simmons, Townsend Bell, Marco Andretti and Dan Wheldon, along with many others.

The IRL Indy Lights Series has gone through three name changes since 2002, including the current one, which has only been in effect since 2008. The Series Champ last year was Raphael Matos with AGR-AFS Racing and before that the Series went by the name the IRL Indy Pro Series. Alex Lloyd was the 2007 winner and then Jay Howard in 2006, both of these gentleman from the UK. Prior to that it was the IRL Infiniti Pro Series, with Wade Cunningham winning in 2005, Brazil's Thiago Madeiros in 2004, Mark Taylor from the UK in 2003 and the first race under that name was won by American AJ Foyt the IV.

Last year's race was called the closest race ever between Logan Gomez and Alex Lloyd who were battling for the finish line. Lloyd closed in on the final lap and made a charge for the finish, while Gomez attempted to hold off the Pro Series Champion. Gomez had a closing lap speed of over 188 miles per hour and when the flashbulbs went off for the photo finish, it was exactly 0.0005 of a second. Gomez had shot the number 24 car over the finish line by just 1.65 inches, making it the closest win in the six year history of the series. That just goes to show you that you can't miss a single race when it comes to the Indy Lights Series. This week's race takes place in Joilet, Illinois at the Chicagoland Speedway and happens on Saturday, August 29th.
